Your Dentist In Edmonton Accepts Dental Emergencies – Always Call!

At Yellowbird Dental in Edmonton, we understand that while no one wants to experience a dental emergency, statistics show that millions of dental emergencies take place every year in Canada. From sports-related injuries to food-related problems, teeth-grinding issues, and more, dental emergencies can arise at the most unexpected times. But what exactly is a dental emergency? And why is it so important to see a dentist as soon as possible if you find yourself having one?

The most important thing to remember if you find yourself in a dental emergency is to call us as soon as possible. Putting off treatment for even a few days can result in serious complications, including infection, further damage to the teeth, and even tooth loss.

What are some common types of dental emergencies?

The most common types of dental emergencies include:

  • Tooth pain
  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A tooth abscess.

How can you care for a dental emergency until you see a dentist?

After you've called us, here are some steps you can follow until we’re able to care for your emergency:

If you have a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and floss gently to remove any food particles that may be lodged between your teeth. You can also take over-the-counter pain medication to help ease the pain.

If you’ve lost a filling or dental crown, try to find the pieces and bring them with you to your appointment. If you can't find them, don't worry - we can usually replace the lost piece without any problem. Until you see us, use a piece of sugarless gum to cover the exposed tooth.

If you have a cracked tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce any swelling.

If you have a knocked-out tooth, try to find the tooth and rinse it off gently with warm water. If possible, try to reinsert the tooth into the socket. If you can't do this, put the tooth in a cup of milk or water and bring it with you to the dentist.

If you have an abscess, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce any swelling.
